The world’s first flower-shaped robot

Posted by: brb In: Robots| Tech ()

Robots come in many different shapes: there are humanoid robots, robots shaped like seals, dogs, snakes, bugs and dinosaurs but this is probably the first known robot that is shaped like a flower.

Korean researchers have developed a hibiscus-shaped robot that can simultaneously be used as humidifier and air freshener. When approached, the robot bends its stalk, says a greeting and opens up its flowers. It opens its petals when it hears human voice and lightens up when its stalk is shaken lightly.

When connected to the internet, this Wi-Fi enabled robot can also guard your house when you’re away (by spraying would-be intruders with perfume, I assume). The chief of the research group that developed the robot says, “When lined up together, these robots look like a flower bed and they can move together with music, like a dance group.”

A stalk of these robots is 120cm long and sports 5 blossoms. The research center is also reportedly developing bee-shaped robots to pollinate the flowers. (I made that last sentence up, although it’s entirely plausible.)
