12 fantastic photos of factories in Japan

Posted by: brb In: Japan| Photos| architecture ()

Lately, I’m having a “factory fetish”, (or “kōjō moe” as they say in Japanese) after browsing through some fascinating pictures of factories in flickr, especially those of sielbleu, hanazuc, totoon and beef.200%. The photographers kindly let me reproduce their photos here.

There is something fascinating about factories at night: the surreal colors, the dazzling lights, smoke billowing through the night air, the almost audible sound of a busy industrial complex. The photos themselves conjure up images of some strange, enormous, metallic creatures of the night on an alien landscape.

{These 12 photos are but a small collection; please visit the photographers’ flickr photostream and blogs for more more: sielbleu, hanazuc (Blog: Not Wild Style), totoon (Blog: Penki Nurikake), beef.200%. }

If you would like to be precise, those are actually photos of oil refineries. Or an oil refinery.

21 | Adam

Also of note- none of what is being released is “smoke” per se. It’s steam. Picture 9 is of a cooling tower which is used to reduce the temperature of water used for cooling. The two sources of pollution from an oil refinery in any country with environmental regulations would be the flare stack (looks like a candle, OPEN at the top, BURNs everything that comes out) and fugitive emissions…leaking valves, pipes, etc of unburned hydrocarbons which you cant see.

From what I can see the only flare pictured is in #5 on the right. Notice its discolored at the top from rust and soot. Also note that there are no platforms on it (only an access ladder).

At least one of these photos is actually a 3-d cad model, and the rest are all very heavily edited in photoshop.

As mentioned before, these all seem to be photos of oil refinery units, judging from the huge size of the places, and the obvious distillation towers, heat exchangers, and holding tanks.

And as many has pointed out, these are mostly plants, not factories. The Japanese term “kōjō” (as in kōjō moe) can be translated as “factory” or “plant” or “industrial complex”. I just chose “factory” to rhyme with the title; somehow “plant fetish” just doesn’t sound right.

Sure, nice industrial pix; but, all I think is: Chemicals, explosions, leaking, toxins, contaminated water, Waste Dumping, exposure to humans, the end of the world.

Not that I care. I’m not having kids, so I don’t really care. How are your kids going to fair in the future? How about your grandchildren? Oh, you’ll be dead then, you won’t care….right?

Look for the cloud in the silver lining, there’s a ruined picnic in the future.
