World first: Fujitsu’s over 10Gbps impulse wireless system
Fujitsu announced today that it has succeeded in achieving super-fast transfer rates of more than 10 gigabits per second using an impulse connection system on a 70-100 GHz band. The technology might pave way for ultra-high-speed wireless LAN in the future.
Japan’s already fast nationwide fiber optic backbone supports such services as broadband Internet and mobile phone networks. However, there are many areas away from the big cities where laying optical fibers is not practical or feasible because of remoteness or harsh terrain.
Fujitsu hopes to lessen the digital divide between the urban and rural areas by developing ultra-high-speed wireless communication devices in place of optical fibers.
Fujitsu’s website has the press release (in Japanese).
Meanwhile, here’s a recent video clip from the BBC about the state of rural computing in Japan (might not play depending on your location).
